diversity & inclusion

CATW staff // jul 9, 2020

As a platform conceived with the objective of bringing unique and diverse perspectives together, we’re looking to explore the global problem of discrimination with a bare-bones, first-principles approach. Ethnicity, nationality, wealth, religion, gender, sexual orientation — these are some characteristics that determine how we identify ourselves, how we think, what we do, where we live, even whom we love. Diversity is about celebrating our differences and maturing from a mindset of mere tolerance to that of genuine appreciation.

... drifting along our creative journey

To be creative is to be curious, to be passionate about discovery and learning (and unlearning, but more on that later). To be creative is to view things with a different lens, to see colors and images differently from others, to see patterns where most see coincidence. To be creative is to be obsessed with problem solving, to have a fast and whirring mind, to constantly question things and come up with alternatives.

For a true creative, discomfort is the ultimate state of comfort. In discomfort there is ambiguity, uncertainty and unpredictability. An appreciation of the unknown is the ideal breeding ground for new ideas and new approaches.

a visual conversation

Images have been a universal common language throughout history, from cave paintings and hieroglyphics to emojis and memes. Pictures are a language that everyone can understand. And because we now can easily produce and share our own pictures, it also seems to be a language that everyone can speak. Thanks to advancing technology, the instruments to make and share pictures are more available to us than ever before. Because of this, we call everyone with a camera a photographer. Photography has evolved so rapidly and has become so common in our daily life that pictures are perceived more as casual communication more than artistic expression. But, as Reza stated, “we don’t call everyone with a pen a writer”.
